Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Wins Prestigious Community Service Award

Award recognizes Royal LePage’s commitment to supporting women’s shelters and preventing family violence.

TORONTO, December 5, 2012 – The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation has won the Communitas Award for its signature event, the National Garage Sale for Shelter. A program of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP), the Communitas Awards recognize exceptional businesses, organizations and individuals for excellence in community service and corporate social responsibility and for changing the way they do business to benefit their communities. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is the only Canadian recipient of this international award in 2012.

Royal LePage is Canada’s only real estate company with its own registered charity, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. It is the country’s largest public foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting women’s shelters and preventing family violence.

The National Garage Sale for Shelter is held annually on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend. Organized by Royal LePage brokers, agents and staff at hundreds of Royal LePage offices across the country, the event has raised $1.2 million since 2009 and is the largest one-day charity garage sale in Canada. All funds raised by Royal LePage offices remain in their local community and because Royal LePage covers the Shelter Foundation’s administrative costs, one hundred percent of all funds raised support women’s shelters and violence prevention programs in every province.

Thousands of Royal LePage brokers, agents and staff support the Shelter Foundation by making commission donations and hosting fundraising events like the National Garage Sale for Shelter. Communitas Award judges found that the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation clearly exhibits the spirit of communitas – people coming together for the good of a community. A complete list of winners can be found on the Communitas website at www.communitasawards.com.

“By recognizing individuals, organizations and companies for their volunteerism and socially responsible business practices, we are hoping to not only bring attention to great programs, but are working with community minded leaders to make the spirit of communitas an essential element of every business,” said Ed Dalheim, Executive Director of AMCP.

“Helping You Is What We Do™ is not just a tagline at Royal LePage, it is our corporate philosophy and it translates into a collective commitment to giving back to the community,” said Shanan Spencer-Brown, Executive Director of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. “Our supporters are tireless in their efforts to help abused women and their children rebuild their lives after violence.”

The 5th Annual National Garage Sale for Shelter will be held on May 11, 2013 at Royal LePage offices across the country. The event is generously sponsored by TD Canada Trust Mobile Mortgage Specialists, Atlas Van Lines Canada and Your Commission Today.

About the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation

The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is Canada’s largest public foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting women’s shelters and ending violence against women and children. Through agent commission donations and the fundraising activities of the Royal LePage network, we have raised over $14 million since 1998 to help provide a safe haven and new beginnings to more than 30,000 women and children each year. To break the cycle of violence, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation also supports violence prevention and education programs. All funds raised by Royal LePage offices remain in their local community and because Royal LePage covers the Shelter Foundation’s administrative costs, one hundred percent of all money and effort goes toward this important cause.
