Spring Cleaning for a Good Cause: 6th Annual Royal LePage National Garage Sale for Shelter Returns on May 10

Royal LePage Aims to Hit $2 Million Raised

TORONTO, May 5 – There’s no better way to send winter packing than to clear out your closets to make room for spring – and support a worthy cause at the same time.  Royal LePage, through its local offices across Canada, is calling for donations for its 6th Annual National Garage Sale for Shelter in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation – an organization committed to supporting women’s shelters and ending violence against women and children.

The National Garage Sale for Shelter will be held at more than 90 Royal LePage offices and other community locations on the Saturday before Mother’s Day (May 10) to drive awareness of the many women and children who experience family violence.  “Mother’s Day is a time to honour the mothers and other important women in our lives. But the unfortunate truth is that half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16 and 360,000 children are exposed to family violence every year,” said Shanan Spencer-Brown, Executive Director of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.

The event brings local residents together with Royal LePage REALTORS® to raise much-needed funds and awareness to support local women’s shelters and to help fund prevention programs to end the cycle of violence in Canadian homes. Since 2009, the National Garage Sale for Shelter has raised more than $1.6 million.

“We have seen an incredible response from participating communities over the past five years. Each year the amount of donated items and the number of people who attend the Garage Sales grows. So this year we are setting our sites on a goal of $2 million dollars raised in total,” said Spencer-Brown. “Violence against women is not something that happens somewhere else far away from us, it happens in all of our communities and to women of all demographics. At Royal LePage, we believe that a house is not truly a home unless it’s safe, which is why we are so committed to providing a safe haven for women and children who have experienced abuse.”

100 percent of the revenue generated by the National Garage Sale for Shelter is used to support local women’s shelters and to help give hope to thousands of women and children escaping family violence. All administrative expenses of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation are underwritten by Royal LePage Canada. The National Garage Sale for Shelter is made possible with the generous support of local partners and its national sponsors: TD Canada Trust Mobile Mortgage Specialists (National Presenting sponsor), Atlas Van Lines Canada (In-kind Moving and Transportation sponsor) and Your Commission Today (Major Event Sponsor).

“Helping you help others is a sentiment that perfectly captures the spirit of the National Garage Sale for Shelter,” says Phil Soper, Royal LePage’s President and CEO. “Our professionals are tireless in their efforts to help create safer homes and healthier communities through the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, but can’t do it without the ongoing support of Canadian families.”

Members of the community are encouraged to get involved by donating gently used items to your local participating Royal LePage office and stop by the National Garage Sale for Shelter location in your neighbourhood on Saturday, May 10th for a little spring shopping while supporting a cause that is truly close to home.

About the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation

The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is Canada’s largest public foundation dedicated exclusively to funding women’s shelters and ending violence against women and children. Since 1998, we have raised more than $18 million dollars with the help and support of the Royal LePage network, along with members of the communities in which they live and work. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation supports 200 local women’s shelters that help provide a safe haven and new beginnings for more than 30,000 women and children each year. To break the cycle of violence, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation also supports long-term violence prevention and education programs. All funds raised by Royal LePage offices remain in their local community and because Royal LePage Canada pays all administrative costs, 100 percent of all money and effort goes toward this important cause.
